The Western Cape Provincial Archives and Records Service is located on Roeland Street, Cape Town.

It is free for the public to visit and search their records.

Address: 72 Roeland Street, Cape Town, South Africa.
You can part on the street where available, or off-road parking is available for the public on Drury Lane. Call (021) 466 8100 if the gate is locked.

Opening Hours

Mondays to Fridays: 08:00 to 16:00
Except Thursdays: 08:00 to 19:00 (reading room)
First Saturday of each month: 9:00 to 13:00 (reading room)

Protocol

When you arrive you will sign in at reception.

You will receive a badge, a locker number and key and table number in the reading room.

Laptops and camera’s are allowed. no longer allowed.

Once inside the reading room you can order the record you desire by providing them with the call number.

These can be found by searching on the online NAAIRS database.

 Note: Delivery of records/books etc is fairly fast, except for a lull over lunch time.

You can search the Death Notices and Estate Files, Wills and Inventories in the paper files there (arranged by years and surname) or online.

By searching online you can also search other archives in South Africa.
